About us
Our Research Lab was established when Professor Abreu joined the Department of Biology at Angelo State University in Fall 2023. Our research focuses primarily on investigating patterns of mammalian diversity across multiple spatial scales and understanding the historical biogeographic processes that drive species diversification, particularly in the Neotropics. We use phenotypic, genomic, and occurrence data from museum specimens, as well as data collected through fieldwork, to address research questions in phylogenetics, phylogeography, systematics, evolution, biogeography, and community ecology.

Dr. Edson Abreu of the Angelo State biology faculty was part of a multinational team of researchers that recently discovered a new species of semi-aquatic rodent in Peru that has been officially named the Incan small-eared water mouse (Incanomys parviauris).

Angelo State University has been awarded a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to collect and study vertebrates that inhabit the Marajó Island in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil.
